The importance of genetics in reproductive medicine:
All of our DNA is stored in forty-six compact units called chromosomes; twenty-two pairs of autosomes and two sex chromosomes. Females have two X-chromosomes and males have one X-, one Y-chromosome.
A person might be a carrier of genetic discrepancies, i.e. translocations - the exchange of chromosome parts between two or more chromosomes, without ever feeling the effects themselves. However, these discrepancies could have a profound impact on fertilization.
Genetic testing of a couple wanting to have a child is crucial. Chances of success and the risk of abortion or genetic diseases during artificial fertilization can be determined with the help of this testing.

Reasons to accept the genetic counseling interview:

  • unexplained sterility
  • hereditary diseases
  • frequent miscarriages (Abortus habitualis)
  • answers to genetic questions
  • female is over 35 years old
  • many unsuccessful artificial fertilization attempts
